After the death of black man George Floyd in the US, there were quite violent demonstrations. Given this, Walmart has removed weapons from some of its stores. In a statement, the company said, “We’ve been taking precautionary guns and ammunition as a responsible seller from some of our stores for some time.”
Significantly, Floyd, a black civilian, died in police detention. Last month on 25 May he was arrested on suspicion of using a fake bill in a shop. George was accused of trying to shop from a shop through a fake $20 note, according to police.
The video surfaced of a white police officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck. During this, he died. Protests have preceded all across America. The nation’s largest retailer, based in Bentonville, said these items are available for purchase but are being kept in a safe room. In the United States, the organization runs 4700 shops.
It did not disclose the number of stores affected by the decision. The company does not sell weapons at any stores in many major urban markets due to loot. Walmart, along with other large companies such as Target, CVS, and Apple, temporarily closed or limited its stores in some locations for security reasons.
Walmart stopped selling ammunition with handguns and short-barrel rifles last year. Apart from this, despite the legal permission, the customer had openly appealed to the customers not to bring weapons in their stores. The company also halted the sale of handguns in Alaska.
