Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived on a three-day visit to Thailand on Saturday. During this visit, PM Modi will participate in the 16th ASEAN-India Summit, 14th East Asia Summit, 3rd RCEP Summit, and related events.
PM Modi has given an interview with Thailand’s leading newspaper ahead of the 16th ASEAN-India Summit. In this interview, PM Narendra Modi answered all the questions regarding India’s leadership in Asia, India’s global strength and RCEP:

Do you think that India has emerged as a global force under your leadership?

Everyone knows that India is an ancient, diverse civilization. Before a few hundred years ago, India made a major contribution to global development. India has contributed to the development of science, literature, philosophy, art, and architecture, and India has never sought to establish its hegemony over other countries but has established good ties with all of them.

We’ve been trying to increase our contribution in the world over the past few years, whether it’s an economic sector, fighting climate change or fighting terrorism, we’re playing our role in every field. India has a major stake in the economic development and progress of the world today. Indian people have shown that they will not be anywhere else if they have an environment to make full use of their abilities.

What are ASEAN and RCEP?

The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is a proposed comprehensive trade agreement for which negotiations are underway between 10 other countries of ASEAN, besides 6 other countries — China, India, Australia, South Korea, Japan, and New Zealand. The RCEP proposes to create an ‘integrated market’ covering all 16 countries, which will make it easier for these countries’ products and services to reach each other.

ASEAN is a group of Southeast Asian countries whose aim is to increase economy, politics, security, culture and regional cooperation in the region. The organization includes countries such as Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
