Afghanistan’s campaign in the 2019 World Cup has gone from poor to worse as five defeats and blame games are taking a toll on the players within the squad. The squad languishes in the points table in the last location and has no opportunity to qualify for the semi-finals.
The next challenge for Afghanistan is against India, which has so far been the team to beat together with New Zealand in the tournament. India will once again be the favorites when they take the field on Saturday in Southampton.
Taking on a formidable side like India is going to be an uphill challenge for the Afghans and on Saturday they’ll be looking to take their A-game against Kohli and Co. Leg-spinner Rashid Khan encouraged his teammates not to repeat the same errors they made so far against India in this tournament.
Rashid admitted that things haven’t gone according to Afghanistan’s plan, but in the remaining four games they’re still upbeat about their opportunities.
“We’ve come in with a lot of preparing and a plan. We’ve tried a lot, we should have won against Sri Lanka and we’ve also targeted the game, but we’ve been unlucky, we’ve not played responsibly.
“We had the ability to chase the target as a batting unit but there are always bad days. We’ve learned from that match. We’ve learned a lot from other games, we still have 4 matches remaining so we hope we’re not going to create the same errors.
“We’ve been playing against India in the Asia Cup, it’s going to be a hard game. With the kind of batting and bowling they’ve got, they’re one of the top teams in the tournament, but we’re going to try not to repeat the same errors. We’re going to concentrate on playing well. We’re going to attempt to play favorably.
Afghanistan just couldn’t recreate the magic they’ve done in last year’s World Cup Qualifiers and Asia Cup and faced five losses in as many matches as they’ve done so far. They were below par with both bat and ball, and their cause was not helped by the sloppy fieldwork.
Fielding is one area where they work very hard, and Rashid said they’re going to have to be at their best in the game against India, which he labeled as the squad that could win the World Cup.
“There’s no doubt that India can’t win the World Cup. The combination they’ve got, the bowling lineup and the fielders they’ve got. In this World Cup, the well-fielding teams are winning matches. India has the fielding skills. They’ve got better batsmen than bowlers, one of the best teams here.
